H.C. Bailey

The only thing I have of H. C. Bailey's Reggie Fortune works is a book of short stories, Mr. Fortune, Please.  Reggie Fortune, a surgeon who is a consultant to Scotland Yard, solves puzzles that initially appear to be minor, but turn out to have wider implications.  He does this by applying crime scene investigation techniques that have become standard today.  Mr. Fortune's languid and off-hand manner contrasts with the zealous but misguided efforts of the police.
